Biography

Sabina Shu-Chun Chiang is one of the leading flautists and teachers in Taiwan. After completing her music education at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, she was appointed Co-Principal Flute in Taipei City Symphony Orchestra and worked there for a few years before going to Royal Academy of Music, London, for further studies with worldwide-known flute professor William Bennett. In Taiwan, she studied with flute teachers: Prof. Jinny Huei-Jin Liu, Shiau-Hua Niu, and Mario Bonzagni (Italy).

Prof. Sabina Chiang is highly acclaimed for her sincere musicality, warm tones, various colors, and well-controlled pitch. Because of her curiosity to discover new music, she plays a lot of contemporary music, both Taiwanese and foreign flute music, not only to deliver the new music to audiences but also to contribute to the responsibility of artists to present the art of the era.

She is the founder and leader of Golden Woodwind Quintet in Taipei. In this capacity, she has commissioned more than 20 quintet works from Taiwanese composers throughout the past 20 years.

Since she was a teenager, she has won many prizes in Taiwan, including twice 1st prize in the senior high school category in the National Competition. Abroad, she was a finalist of the Japan Flutists Association solo competition in 1987, and was awarded the Audience Prize. She was invited twice to the Kobe International Flute Competition in 1989 and 1993. She played as soloist with many orchestras: National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, Moment Musicaux Orchestra, Taipei Municipal Symphony Orchestra, I Musici de Montreal, Symphony Orchestra of Taipei Municipal University of Education, Symphony Orchestra of National Taiwan Normal University, Symphony Orchestra of Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University. She performed at many venues worldwide, such as New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Munich, and Seattle.

In 2007, Professor Chiang gave master classes both in Shanghai Conservatory and the high school of Shanghai Conservatory. She has been the soloist of concerto and duo concert, as well as the jury of the competition, the speaker of lecture in Asia Flutists Federation (AFF) Congresses which took place in Tokyo, Taipei, Shenyang (China), Kobe, Busan, and Shanghai, in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2024.

In July 2014, she was invited to be jury and soloist in the China Flute Association and Beijing Flute Festival.

In 2015, 2016, 2017, 2024, and 2025, she performed concerts in NFA "National Flute Association" of the U.S.A.

In 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2025, she was invited to be jury and soloist in the Singapore Flute Festival.

In the summers of 2017, 2018, and 2019, she was faculty of Global Summer Institute of Music (GSIM), Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia.

Her CD “Hakka Music Dialogue within a Century” had 3 nominations for Taiwan 2023 “The 34th Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music.”

Currently, she is Flute Professor of the Music Department, University of Taipei, and leader of Golden Woodwind Quintet. She was elected to an honorable title of “Associate of Royal Academy of Music, ARAM.”
